AltspaceVR, a virtual reality platform popular among tech geeks and VR enthusiasts is shutting down. AltspaceVR which allowed users to connect and socialize in real time has dubbed its internet exit “Sunset” and it will be sunsetting on March 10, 2023… for real. The platform, which was created in 2013 almost exited in 2017 but was acquired by Microsoft and became stronger in the years that followed.

AltspaceVR first launched with the goal of creating a space or world where people would attend live virtual events, connect and basically be the earliest adopters of the virtual reality concept and what the metaverse aspires to be. The connections formed a passionate community on AltspaceVR and will miss it terribly.

AltspaceVR users formed lifelong memories, cherished friendships, and even found love on the platform, making it nothing short of a success.
Already, some of its users have begun hosting events in readiness for the platforms final sunset.

According to the company, the decision to sunset the platform was not an easy one, but they see the opportunity for virtual reality (VR) to expand beyond just consumers and into the business world. They hope to achieve this by shifting their focus to support immersive experiences powered by Microsoft Mesh.

Appreciating the AltspaceVR community who have used the platform over the years, a spokesperson for AltspaceVR said, “It has been a privilege to help unlock passions among our users. From educational opportunities for personal growth to the development of unique and wonderful events, groundbreaking art, and immersive experiences, we’ve enabled our community to achieve more. With Mesh, we aspire to build a platform that offers the widest opportunity to all involved, including creators, partners, and customers.

Per its plans for the future, the company hopes to focus on workplace experiences with their new platform, Microsoft Mesh, which aims to provide a more open, accessible, and secure version of immersive experiences in the metaverse.
